A first day cover (FDC) is an envelope upon which postage stamps are affixed to be canceled on their first day of issue. Depending on the policy of the nation issuing the postage stamp, official first day postmarks sometimes may be applied to first day covers weeks or months after the first day of issue.

Part of a series of stamps issued by Paraguay in 1973 depicting Florentine paintings, this air mail stamp shows a detail from Domenico di Michelino's <em>La commedia illumina Firenze</em> (<em>The Comedy Illuminates Florence</em>). Michelino's fifteenth-century fresco painting is in the cathedral of Florence, Santa Maria del Fiore. In the stamp's upper right corner is "PARAGUAY / AEREO". The denomination is in the lower left corner while the artist and designer are indicated along the bottom: "DOMENICO DI MICHELINO" and "LITO. NACIONAL - PORTO - PORTUGAL".

This rectangular cancellation was created to celebrate an exhibition titled "Florenz!" held at the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn, Germany, from November 22, 2013, through March 9, 2014. The cancellation features Dante holding a book and gesturing in an image derived from Domenico di Michelino's fifteenth-century painting <em>Allegory of the Divine Comedy</em> in the Florence cathedral.<span> The cancellation has text as follows: at the top: "BUNDESKUNSTHALLE"; and at the bottom: "FLORENZ! / 22.11.13-9.3.14 in Bonn". The cancellation also features the logo of the Bundeskunsthalle and the fleur-de-lis symbol representing Florence.<br /></span>
